NYFW Day 2 | Look 2

This vintage Todd Oldham suit caught my eye back in the summer at the newly opened What Goes Around Comes Around in East Hampton. It was the very first piece I saw as I entered the shop, on a mannequin with a Mexican blanket thrown over one shoulder. I loved the way they styled it. I was instantly drawn to the suit and finally broke down and had them take it off the mannequin. It was a perfect fit, so really the suit chose me. I also knew I would wear it to NYFW because that's what it deserves. That afternoon I had the opportunity to meet one of the owners of WGACA, Seth Weisser, and he was able to give me a little background on the suit, it had just arrived from Paris apparently.

Styling this suit had to be done carefully, as you do not want it to ever look like a costume. I decided a palette of muted ivory and beige would allow the suit to shine. I wanted to wear it with a croqueted sweater or vest underneath. Here, I doubled up the turtlenecks—it was in the negatives that day—the bottom sweater is light beige the top is an old Ruby by Ralph Lauren ivory croqueted turtleneck, one of the favorite basics of my wardrobe and so great for layering.  To top off the neckline, the perfect accessory, a stunning Turquoise(The Grant) necklace and Gold Crown and Heart Twin earrings from Kavador.

As for the camel coat, ivory boots and handbag, those I decided on 5 minutes before I walked out the door. I find some sort of frantic joy out of having to style under pressure, it can really get the creative juices flowing! I see it in terms of music—classical and jazz for instance—I love both, however I am a classically trained musician, which means hours upon hours in the practice perfecting one phrase. An orchestra will rehearse any given symphony exactly (or as close to exactly) how it will be performed, where as in jazz the musicians obviously do practice and have their go-to licks, yet there is an importance on creating or improvising something completely new on the spot at the time of performance. This is how I look at styling, I seek to incorporate both elements to achieve visual harmony. [wink]
