Stories from Paris: PFW Day 1

This is one of my favorite stories of fashion month and definitely my favorite moment of Paris Fashion Week.

While waiting to go into a show at Palais de Tokyo, I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned to find Parisian skaters boys, Cedi and Alexandre. They asked me if I was going to the show and I if they could tag along since they had never seen a PFW fashion show ever before and they were curious. I didn’t say No. After talking to them for a few moments I told them to follow me and we would see what happens, obviously I couldn’t guarantee anything but I refused to say No. I did get them into the show, and after checking their backpacks and skateboards at the door we made it up to the show space. After everything was said and done the three of us sat front row.

I love this story for several reasons, one being the message it relays: Growing up I heard No, from the majority of adults/educators I was exposed to. They told me No, that what I wanted to do and my aspirations were too difficult to achieve, that I would never be good enough, adults that could have easily had inspiring and encouraging words instead took that time to paint a negative picture. And till this day I can’t forget that behavior.

If you’re presented with a opportunity to enrich and inspire a young person. Say, Yes. or at least try to encourage curiosity and interest. Who knows how far reaching your words and actions will be.
