New Works: Paintings by Carole Bayer Sager

Last week I visited Santa Monica’s William Turner Gallery to see Carole Bayer Sager’s latest exhibit, New Works, which focuses on the comfort foods of our culture: grilled cheese, melted Hersey’s kisses, M & M’s, cupcakes, red velvet, and explosions of our favorite childhood candies. The audience is given a new perspective as the subjects are enlarged and almost distorted. Art never looked so yummy!

Not only is Carole a talented painter, but she has also won an Academy Award, Grammy Award and Golden Globe as a critically acclaimed singer and songwriter. In recent times she has chosen painting as her creative outlet, and in March 2011 Sager opened to a sold out debut exhibit at L.A. Arthouse.

It is inspiring to me to see someone that has accomplished so much in one specific field, to then make the leap to a completely different and extremely difficult undertaking of becoming a skilled painter. This collection of paintings truly shows Sager's natural talent for the visual arts.

“Carole Bayer Sager doesn’t paint food, she paints how we look at and see food.” writes art critic Peter Frank. “[She] is, if anything, more invested in the sensuality of the paint than in the sensuality of the subject matter. The paint itself is rich, thick, tactile, the surfaces often glazed. If the goodies she depicts inspire nostalgia for gustory indulgence, the rich feel of the paint awakens a deeper, more directly and intensely felt sensation." - Peter Frank

Do not go to this exhibit hungry.
